My name is Mike Feldman (KC9LRB), and I was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, graduating from Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in 2002. I obtained a bachelor's degree from Indiana University (Bloomington) and a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati - both in criminal justice. Serving in a public safety role since 2007, my professional life has been dedicated to serving my community.
I became a licensed radio amateur in 2007. My interest in radio began in 2003 - when my parents gave me a CB radio from the 1980s. Contacting random truckers was exciting, and it inspired me to browse Radio Shack endlessly. I bought a dual trunking scanner, and I heard my first Ham transmission. By early 2007, I began studying for my technician class license. At the time, I was in a profession I hated, and studying provided a mental departure from the stress. In May, in the span of three days, I quit my job, passed my licensure exam, and began my current career. I spent several years as a regular on my local repeaters, enjoying the contacts I made locally and worldwide using IRLP.
In late 2010, I knew I had to make some drastic changes to my lifestyle. Being obese, embarrassed, and becoming lonely, I embarked on a fitness journey that continues today. While those years were fantastic, I completely lost interest in radio.
In early 2024, I bought a drone and began flying it. Needless to say, it re-invigorated my interest in radio. I got back on the air; in doing so, I discovered a whole new world in digital radio. I always enjoyed things like IRLP and Echolink, but things like Yaesu System Fusion, DMR, and D-STAR were even better. I took the liberty of purchasing a new HT - a Yaesu FT5D, as well as an openSPOT 4 Pro. DroidStar has also been a constant companion. These devices allow me to use amateur radio to connect with the world. While not the accomplishment of using only RF to make long-distance contacts, the contacts are still being made. And, having friendly conversations with people is why I initially became interested in radio!
I am an Eastern Orthodox Christian. Aside from radio, my hobbies include playing my guitar (horribly!), exercising, studying history, international travel, and spending time with my wonderful family and friends. I have two cats: Enzo and Pippa.
Cheers, and 73!
